The RO DBT Clinicians of Washington and Oregon
RO DBT NORTHWEST is a group of clinicians that have been intensively trained in Radically Open Behavior Therapy (RO DBT). We are among the earliest groups of clinicians intensively trained in the US and have been in an active consult group since 2015. We provide Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy treatment (individual therapy and skills classes) in both Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. We also offer education and training for clinicians interested in specializing in RO DBT.
We don’t see things as they are—we see things as we are.
-Dr. Thomas Lynch, RO DBT Founder
What is Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy?
RO DBT is a treatment model that is proving to be effective in certain treatment resistant mental health disorders. What makes RO DBT different is that it targets an individuals bio-temperament. Individuals that benefit from RO DBT have a very high level of self-control - defined as inhibition of urges, impulses, and desires - a highly valued trait by most societies. Too much self-control can be problematic when it comes to connecting with other people.
In RO DBT we call this excessive self-control overcontrol (OC). Overcontrol has been linked to social isolation, poor interpersonal functioning, hyper-perfectionism, rigidity, risk aversion, lack of emotional expression, and difficult to treat mental health problems such as obsessive compulsive disorder, restrictive eating disorders, treatment resistant anxiety, depression, and more. In RO DBT we directly target the behaviors and thought processes that are observed in overcontrolled persons. RO DBT specifically works towards what it believes are the three important aspects of emotional well-being: openness, flexibility, and social connectedness.
